G'day Stewie,
a big thanks for the CD. Sharon and I listened to it on the way home from Warren's gathering last week and I had a real good listen to it on my way home from work last night as I sat in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway. I was mighty impressed, to the extent where I thought "yeah, I should tell him". You guys have put together an excellent array of variation & feel. My fav's are Acland Street, When the River Runs and in particular Born to See.
Well done, I take me hat off to you.
best regards Steve

Dear Ed (itor),
I feel that somewhere deep inside this small town of Torquay, something of a musical innovation is brewing.
On Friday evening at The Rose in Torquay I was witness to an event that may be one of the leading edge style events that will come to dominate the delivery of unsigned, emerging talent in local areas.
Ahh! Big deal you may well say but please bear in mind the state of decay that major record companies find themselves (financially). The shedding of artists and the quandary that now surrounds the delivery and sales of original music around the world that the Internet has managed to ‘shake rattle and roll’. I use this well coined phrase very specifically to signal a new era’s entrance.
The support on Friday evening at the Rose was unsurpassed in my memory of events at this venue. Packed car parks, kids running, young adults strutting their wares, parents and friends catching up and grandparents not quite understanding the fuss but impressed no less. Around 250 people from 6months to 80+ years paid good money to see local performers do their thing in a professional environment.
The acts came in all forms, from an 11 year old, too solo artists and rock bands all good in their own right, but also irrelevant in the big picture.
Who would have believed something like this could hit such a nerve with the locals. Lets check this out a bit, you just have to dig through the demographics, sounds complex but it ain’t! Work the numbers, read the stats and you will find that this method of delivery may well be the start of something that the music/entertainment industry has been long waiting for.
What this comes down to is global social trends over the last decade or so, the advent of the internet and financial family pressure, 1.87 kids, and exclusive license to be more informed and choose our own path, all within reason of course.
I am a great music fan but I haven’t paid for a concert ticket in, well I can’t tell you how long! I am certainly not paying $30 of my hard earned money for one song on a CD that the record companies want me to like and is pumped endlessly out the radio. (Yoh! Yoh! Choo!)
Why would I pay money when the Internet lets me download what I want, when I want and how I want, for free?
I want what I want, OK I’m a spoilt brat, but we all are, especially the ones of us who have taken the road to ‘Sea Change’ world and ‘found the light’. Millions more want to, but dare not. My social and family networks, my work and the Internet allows me to live here and almost respects me for exercising that choice. My financial status tells me to prioritize things so: I want life style, I want my family to have every opportunity available if they choose, I demand choice (at every juncture) that lets me explore things that my parents generation never had the opportunity too (mainly from a social compliance stand).
Maybe record companies should take a leaf from the book of GekkoPro and start putting out new artists on compilations. Perhaps you could buy Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, Delta Goodrem and Bernard Fanning on the same CD with every track (say 4 each) as a killer track, perhaps this would introduce new artists to a national audience, much like the support act system when playing ‘live’. Locally you could team up Mia Dyson, Ash Grunwald, Xavier Rudd and Rob Sawyer, all loosely the same genre and Wow! I would buy that album, I have to, I am emotionally and socially obligated, so come on spread the love!!!
I’d pay to see that show as well, why not, I get lots of good artists, lots of good songs and lots of entertainment for my hard earned ‘buck-a-rooney!’
This is quite the revolution just waiting to happen, and it doesn’t need money, all it needs is a new perspective, some drive, two parts of local support, a generous spoon of quality control (which the free market will supply) and voila, a new era is born.
The support base is localized, ‘surgical strike music delivery’, sell to the people who want to buy and you don’t need to jam it down their radios all day. National ‘roll-outs’ of new artists are too expensive and most fail, do it local. OK the returns are not as spectacular in the short-term but over time the artists and the support base will grow, Darwin’s theory will supply you with highly groomed acts ready for release, mark my words this may not be the answer but it is one very big step closer to being the answer, until it changes again with the next generation of cyber ‘thing-a-me-bobs’
Regards, Stephen Jeffries.

Dear Stewart and ‘180 Knots’
Thank you for your enormous contribution to the SurfAid benefit held at Bells C********* last week!
We heard here in Sydney that the music was sensational! SurfAid International Australia is absolutely thrilled with the event and it sounded like a great night with plenty of dancing. Dougal and I both wish we could have made it!
As I said to Kerri, I am in the office this morning and overwhelmed by the sincere support of the generous people that attended the party. SurfAid thanks you! Hopefully, there will be another party next year! I will be sure to make it!

We played with The Swells (cover band from Torquay) on Saturday night at a private function that 'went-off' this is an email that we received a couple of days later. Thanks Guys.
Dear 180 knots
You sounded bloody great at the 'Bells C********' gig on Saturday! The sound was fabulous! The best bass sound and playing, that I've heard live, for as long as I can remember. Long live 'the fro'... Barry Adamson would be proud...The guitars just sung... f**k I was impressed...The fact that you were playing your own songs made it that much more impressive... You are a very cool band indeed...Keep it up!
With respect... Dahl Murphy 'The Swells'

We have some great shows coming up including the support in Geelong for Daryl Braithwaite, National hotel with MJ Taylor and other locals so come along and check it out.
Applications for all the local outdoor music festivals are now open and we have applied in force to get onto these shows, hopefully we will see you at some of them over the summer.
Musically we are rehearsing our new live set for all to see and preparing additional songs for the CD. We are intending to go back in the studio and lift the 'One for the Monkey' CD to a full album, for release later in the year. The new material will trialed in our live sets and honed for recording in September.
Fun Stuff: We did an interview with the local paper (click) early June and the result was an eye opener for us, lots of people read The Echo and the feed back has been great, Thanks to Cassie Milner (reporter) for the effort.
Its' now winter in Torquay and the surf is great but the temperature has plummeted and shed practise involves heaters and beanie caps to keep the rhythm going. Would love to hear from you so send us an email if your inspired and we will catch you next time. Regards 180knots.com

Well hello internet world we now have a presence for you to peruse, as this is the first newsletter I might fill in some history details for you.
We only decided on the name in Nov 2004 after much deliberation, the problem was that the names had to be firstly; acceptable to all, then it needed to be registered for the business name and then for the dot com thing, now this may sound easy but let me tell you it took months to find something that worked but we now have it and so here we are on your screen!!.
Would love to get some feed back from you! (music @180knots dot com)
